GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) A local fourth grader is celebrating her upcoming birthday not by getting gifts, but by giving them.
"It's nicer to give a gift than get a gift," said soon-to-be 10-year-old Zoe Sanville.
Sanville was only six years old when she decided she wanted to spend her own birthday party putting together shoe boxes stuffed with toys, toiletries and more for children in need. She donates them to Operation Christmas Child, which sends the gifts to children all over the world.
"If they don't have anything like that, they could feel really happy when they get it," she said.
The boxes Zoe and her friends filled at her birthday party Saturday will go to Mexico or South America.
"A lot of them may not have ever had a brand new toy or brand new clothing," said Nicci Sanville, Zoe's mother.
Zoe foregoes birthday presents from her family so they can buy the items. Each box costs about 10 dollars and this year they are putting together 10 of them for Zoe's tenth birthday.
"We're still having a birthday party, there's still going to be birthday cake, and her friends will probably bring her birthday presents," said Nicci Sanville. "It's not that she gives up everything, it's just that she has that willingness and that tenderness in her heart that she really wants to share."
