Fruita Sales Tax Increase Passes By Two Votes, City Recounting Ballots

Fruita City Officials say Tuesday's ballots will be recounted after the Referred Issue A passed by only two votes.

The measure would increase the city sales and use tax by one percent, with that money going towards funding a new Fruita Rec Center. 1261 people voted in favor of the measure, and 1259 people voted against it.

Fruita residents also chose a new mayor. Ken Henry defeated opponent David Karisny. Henry received 1273 votes and Karisny received 1119 votes.

Fruita residents were also asked to choose three city council members. Mel Mulder, Terry Moss, and Stacey Mascarenas beat out five others for the seats.

These results are unofficial until the city finishes recounting the ballots and certifies the election.
