The Mesa County Sheriff's office says one extra click on a computer screen could have kept a parolee in jail who later was charged with murder.
According to court documents, Lonnie Herrera was on parole when he was arrested for beating 23 year old Anna Macias. He was able to bond out and now faces facing murder charges in the shooting death of Macias and child abuse resulting in death for her baby.
Officials from the Mesa County sheriff's office, Mesa County jail, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, and Colorado Department of Corrections discussed the case of Herrera and how they could stop suspects from slipping through the cracks. This was one of many meetings that will happen between state officials to decide on changes to the system.
Mesa County Sheriff Stan Hilkey says that this case could change the way law enforcement agencies across the state do business. Hilkey says there is nothing in CBI manuals or state procedures that says a detention officer or deputy has to run that extra check, something he wants to see change and states that will change in Mesa County.
