Investigators want to know who dumped several barrels of flammable liquid in the Mesa County desert, one mile north of the airport.
Just after 10:30 Monday morning, the Grand Junction Fire Department received a call from the BLM after it found the barrels.
Firefighters say it was polybudene, a chemical generally used in auto painting. The fire department says the liquid is only minimally toxic but is a fire hazard and an environmental hazard if it leaks.
"We're not taking any chances," said Grand Junction Fire Department spokesman Mike Page. "We had the appropriate resources. If there was a spill we could contain it."
The BLM is investigating the case and says the culprits could be slapped with thousands of dollars in fines.
