Grand Valley Farmers Preparing For Freezing Temperatures Overnight

Grand Valley farmers spent the day preparing their orchards for the threat of an overnight freeze.

Overnight temperatures are expected to drop to below freezing, putting farmers on high alert and quick defense.

Anything in- or post-bloom is vulnerable.

Farmers worked to prepare by checking wind machines which work by circulating warmer air back down toward the trees, running propane heaters through rows of trees, and checking sprinklers, which can also be used to bring up dew points and temperatures.

But as much preparing as the farmers go through, they won’t know how well the blossoms and young fruit faired until, at the earliest, tomorrow.
