Twenty-two-year-old Morgan Hite is behind bars in Alaska charged with killing her own newborn son at a north Grand Junction home. Officials say what they can't understand is that Hite already has a 4-year-old.

According to an arrest affidavit, on February 24th Hite and her 4-year-old daughter went to visit her father and step mother. Just one day later, she gave birth in a neighbor's bathtub. Police say she then put the infant in a plastic bag and walked back to her parents’ home where she put it in a tote.

Hite and her daughter continued to stay at her parents’ home on Grand Vista Way for more than a month before returning to Alaska where she lives. The baby was left in the closet for more than two months before Hite's father and stepmother found him and called 911.

At this point, police investigators and the coroner's office are confident the baby was born alive.

“What a tragedy and we're sorry to report such news, but we are at least relieved that we do have the mother in custody and that the criminal and justice procedure for this infant can proceed,” says Chief Bill Gardner of the Grand Junction Police Department.

Hite remains in Alaska, awaiting extradition back to Grand Junction.

Authorities say she also has an active arrest warrant in Grand Junction for failing to appear in a case dealing with check fraud.

If Hite fights extradition it could take two to three months to bring her back to Mesa County because DA would have to request a warrant from Governor Bill Ritter.

Now, along with first degree murder, Hite is facing charges of child abuse resulting in death.
