Mothers who feel they have nowhere to turn do have an option to give up their babies and have protection under Colorado law.The Safehaven law went into effect in Colorado in 2000.
It allows women to leave their newborns at a hospital or fire station. 15 babies have been adopted because of the law.
Two and half year-old Conrad is a happy, healthy toddler.
"He's been such a miracle from the beginning," his mom says.
But his life began much differently.
"My son's birth mom walked into the hospital..dropped him off and walked out."
And Conrad’s now adopted mother, got the call she and her husband had been praying for.
"We got the call on the phone that there was a baby and would we like to come pick him up."
Told that they could never have children of their own...Conrad’s parents had decided to adopt.
"I said if I could wave my magic wand I would want a mother to come into the hospital and drop-off a baby boy with no drugs or alcohol in his system and walk away. The social worker looked at me and said that doesn't happen."
But months later, that's exactly what did happen.
All thanks to the safe haven law, a law that changed this family's life forever.
"Such immense feeling of gratitude to that mother for 1st of all choosing life for a child that has now brought my husband and I enormous amounts of joy."
Although many babies have been adopted because of the law. 15 babies have died because they were abandoned since the law went into effect.
