Family of Teen Shot in the Face Gets a New Van

Anita Martinez almost lost her son when he was shot in the face. During the same month the single mother was kicked out of her house and broke her leg. But things are looking up for Martinez thanks to a surprise gift that will help the family "hit the road" to recovery.

Anita Martinez has been staying at the Palisade Living Center while she gets physical therapy for her broken leg. She says she has been fighting an uphill battle since September.

"Last year was really hard, I've been through so much," said Martinez.

Hard may be an understatement, Martinez watched as her 18–year–old son, Martin, fought his way back to health after he was shot in the face.

"It really put perspective on his life," said Martinez.

She says her family was then kicked out of her house, and to top it all off, her car brokedown.

But after all of her battles Anita Martinez is getting some very good news.

Hope for a new start, with a new minivan. Grand West Kia and Mountain Wallboard paid for the donation to Mesa County Partners for the family.

They didn't ask for anything. I just called them up and they were very surprised," said Maggie Moorland, a caseworker with Partners.

She and a co–worker got the idea to help the Martinez family.

"It seems like for the Martinez family it was just one thing after another, after another," said Moorland.

The donation will lift a burden off of the family's shoulders and now Martinez says she can spend more time with her kids.

"It's gonna help us out a lot, now we can do more things as a family."

She has only one thing to say to the people who made it possible...
"Thank you!"

Martin Martinez will graduate from Palisade High School tomorrow night. Anita martinez says the family will drive their in their new minivan.
