MONTROSE, Colo. According to our partners at the Montrose Daily Press, the young man shot by Montrose Police Offers after allegedly threatening them with a gun is 19-year-old Michael Leroy Yates.

Yates was taken into custody Tuesday evening after being released from the hospital, after recovering form an undisclosed number of gunshot wounds. He was shot by a Montrose Police Officer after allegedly threatening the officer with a gun.

Michael Leroy Yates is not the same person as Michael Yates, who pleaded guilty in 2009 to first-degree attempted murder in a slashing attack at Montrose High School.

Leroy Yates has a checkered criminal history. He pleaded guilty in June of last year to identity theft and was sentenced to fines and public service as part of a two-year deferred judgment. In 2013 he also pleaded guilty to criminal mischief and he received fines and probation.

This time around Michael Leroy Yates is being charged with first degree assault, possession of a weapon by a previous offender, first degree criminal tampering, felony menacing, theft and protection order violation. He is being held on $25,000 bond.
