Grand Junction May Convert Sewage Gas Into Fuel

Grand Junction, Colo. (AP) Grand Junction officials are considering a 3-million-dollar plan to install equipment at a wastewater treatment plant to convert sewer methane gas into fuel for city vehicles.

Methane produced from solid waste would be converted to compressed natural gas under the plan.

It still requires approval from the City Council and Mesa County Board of Commissioners.

Grand Junction purchasing manager jay valentine says the carbon and the smell would be removed from the gas.

He says the gas would cost about $1.29 per gallon equivalent to produce, and would first power the city's sanitation trucks, then buses.
