Flag Retirement Ceremony

A local group helps celebrate Memorial Day by burning flags the traditional, honorable way.

The Grand Valley Combined Honor Guard held a flag retirement ceremony on Sunday at the Grand Junction Veterans Memorial Ceremony.

The tradition involves honoring the flags and then burning them.

The flags burned for that calendar year are then laid to rest and topped with a commemorative headstone.

The Honor Guard encourages anyone who wants to retire at torn, tattered, or tired flag to bring it to your local VFW Chapter to be disposed of properly.
