A judge set bond at $500,000 for Michael Byerrum, the man Grand Junction Police say snatched a little girl on Saturday.

Officers say around 8:30pm Saturday Byerrum kidnapped a little girl from in front of her home and threw her in his trunk.

According to the arrest affidavit, 40–year–old Byerrum pulled up to where the 10–year–old was playing with friends, got out of his car and asked the little girl to help him find his lost kitten.

Court documents say when she got close enough to the car, he picked her up, put her in his trunk, and drove off.

The little girl told Police Byerrum took her out of the trunk a little while later, threatened to cut her throat and tried to put a bandana over her face, but that's when she bit his nose and he threw her to the ground and drove off.

Officers found her wandering in the dark near the Department of Energy.

The 10–year–old girl then idetified Byerrum in a line-up.

Police arrested him just after midnight Sunday on charges of kidnapping, child abuse and menacing.

The little girl's mother tells 11 News despite what's happened, she's doing well.

Byerrum will be back in court next week for formal filing of charges.

Police sat Byerrum has quite the lengthy criminal history including three prior felony convictions. A judge convicted him for kidnapping in 1994 and he was still on probation for that case. Byerrum has more than a dozen other arrests in Colorado and Texas for burglary, assault, drugs and escape.
