With summertime temperatures finally arriving here in Grand Junction, animal experts are warning owners; don't leave your pet locked up in a hot car.

The Mesa County Sheriff's Office says you could be charged with a felony for animal cruelty.

The Roice Hurst Humane Society says if it's a hot day, it's best to leave your pet at home.

When the outside temperature is 90 degrees, it can get up to 140 inside your car.

Pets left in hot cars can suffer from dehydration, to heat stroke – causing death.

A good rule of thumb is if it’s too long for you to comfortably wait in your car, then it’s probably the same for your pet.

If you see an animal locked in a hot car, and the situation appears to be unsafe, call your local authorities.
