Church Cleaning Up After Truck Crashes Into Sanctuary

A close call for a local church when a woman drives her truck right through the side of the building. Now Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church is working to get things back in order before Sunday service.

Church members were out all day Tuesday, trying to clean up the damage from Monday night's crash. Meanwhile the Sheperd of the Valley Church is waiting on the insurance adjuster.

Colorado State Troopers say 45–year–old Meliss George was drunk when she swerved off of F Road and crashed into the Shepherd of the Valley Church Monday.

"She's always welcome. We welcome anybody not, quite this way, we prefer they walk in the doors," Pastor Ron Powers told 11 News on Tuesday.

Pastor Powers jokes about the crash, but in all seriousness, he's thankful everyone's alright.

"It's good no one was here and i'm glad the driver is unhurt too," said Powers.

He says a home owner's association group was getting ready to meet in the sanctuary, and during the school year, the choir would have been meeting.

"It took out the pews where the choir sat, it could have been way worse."

The crash destroyed the church's piano, some hymnals and pews, the baseboard heating system and the wall on the north side of the sanctuary.

Tuesday, the church was busy with visitors. Instead of firefighters and state troopers, it was paritioners, asking how they could help.

"It's just a building, we're gonna go on," said Powers.

So until Sunday, church members will be dusting off the bibles and the pews, vaccuming up the dirt and praying for the stranger who drove into their building.

The Colorado State Patrol didn't have an exact estimate for the damage but says it could be thousands of dollars. Damage or no damage, Pastor Powers says he will still hold service on Sunday.
