Teen dies after falling near Independence Monument

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. A 16-year-old male has died after falling nearly 100 feet from Independence Monument Tuesday evening.

The teen, along with three other people, were near the viewing area of Independence Monument. He fell after looking over the edge.

The Mesa County Search and Rescue team was called out to locate and rescue the teen who was in and out of consciousness when responders arrived on scene.

Within an hour of the dispatch call the rescue team had arrived on scene, and then within 20-30 minutes crews had reached the Grand Junction teenager.

At some point while authorities were trying to rescue the teen he succumbed to his injuries.
