With the fall semester just around the corner football teams are taking to the practice field as we reach 51 straight days of high temperatures of 90 degrees or above on Monday.
Local football powerhouse Palisade High School took to the field for their annual camp on Monday. The concern is how to keep their athletes safe during this record heat streak. Grand Junction has now tied the record for consecutive days of 90 degrees or above for a high temperature.
Doctor Paul Sturges with Docs on Call says practicing outdoors in the extreme heat can be dangerous if athletes and coaches do not take proper precautions. Dr. Sturges says, "When the temperature gets up above 90 especially, our body starts to have trouble controlling our inner body temperature. When you're out exerting yourself like in football practice or other sports, besides the heat from the sun your body is producing its own internal heat."
Palisade Head Coach John Arledge says he takes hydration extremely seriously by teaching his athletes proper hydration techniques. Arledge says, "You just got to drink enough water probably the day before. If you're thirsty on the day of you probably didn't get enough water the night before."
Dr. Sturges recommends in addition to drinking water it is essential to also replenish lost electrolytes from sweating. Electrolytes can be found in beverages containing sodium.
With the proper hydration habits the Palisade football team and coach Arledge are looking for a healthy and possible championship season.
