As the city of Grand Junction gets closer to reaching a resolution to its recent invocation issue, the Mesa County Commissioners are hearing it for the first time.
At a meeting Monday morning, Grand Junction resident Bill Hugenberg brought up the invocation issue and accused Commissioners Rowland and Aguafresca of being in violation of the Constitution.
Hugenberg, a retired attorney, says according to court rulings, it is unconstitutional to name a specific deity (i.e.: Jesus, Buddha, Allah) in an invocation.
After a nearly fifteen minute debate, the meeting was abruptly adjourned.
Mesa County Commissioner Janet Rowland says the current invocation policy is that commissioners have the right to say their own invocations as they please.
Hugenberg says that kind of policy leaves room for litigious repercussions.
