A Grand Junction man was rushed to the hospital after authorities say he fell asleep behind the wheel and flipped his semi truck on its side. The strange thing, they say, is that he was wide awake seconds before it happened.
Colorado State Patrol says as the 49-year-old driver was transporting production water to Cisco, Utah, he made a routine stop at the Colorado-Utah port of entry.
Troopers say just seconds after he pulled out, he fell asleep behind the wheel and drove off the interstate near mile marker 13. They say after waking up and realizing what was happening, the man tried to get back on the road, but the weight of his tank flipped the truck on its side.
He was transported to St. Mary's hospital with non-life threatening ear and head injuries. Officials say he will be cited for careless driving.
Troopers on scene say the tank was not punctured in the accident and none of its contents spilled out.
