Chipeta Elementary is a new school for District 51, but this school is a little different.

Chipeta Elementary is the first total "Green" school. It opens on the first day of school on Monday.

Solar panels on the roof are used for electricity. The school has energy efficient light bulbs and insulation. The school will also feature a menu of organic food grown locally.

In keeping with the "Green" theme the school also has advancements in technology to help with education. Every class room is wired with sound so that children in the back can hear the lesson just as well as children sitting in the front. The school is using whiteboards call Promethean which are interactive touch screen computers.

The computer has a number of computer labs with many programs aiding in learning. Even the playground equipment follows the Green theme. The equipment is made from recycled plastic and they used recycled rubber instead of gravel.

The school was paid by a surplus from the last bond issue. The school will host a grand opening celebration in its gym Monday morning at 8 a.m.
