Hanna, a black lab, swims across the dog pond to get her tennis ball. Haley, a boxer mix, can only watch from the sidelines.
Alexis Whitely, Haley's owner, says, "either drain the water and leave it out or clean it up." Whitely, says, Hanna, got sick after playing in the pond water, at the dog park, for five days straight.

"Bacterial Gastro–intestinitis. She was on antibiotics for ten days and now she is exiled to this side of the park because of the water," says Whitely. And Haley isn't the only one who may have gotten sick from the water.

Anne Norman, owns two dogs. "I can't say its due to the water because they were puppies at the time and they were eating a lot of stuff but it was very coincidental that right after they fell into that water is when they had those gastro intestinal problems."

"I think the first couple times I came she seemed to be a little sick and I just kinda watched her and I think it was something she got used to," says, poodle owner, Mary Anne Shaw.

Traci Wieland of the Grand Junction Parks and Recreation Department says, "we are actually trying to get into a better system for how often we might test that water and just to maintain some standards. It would be something that dogs, if they were in any other rivers, lakes or streams, they could potentially encounter."

Rickard Webb owns three dogs. "This is one of the best dog parks we go to." He says he is concerned about the water quality but says he is prepared. "My dogs have been vaccinated for Guardia, because I'm out a lot with 'em."
