New parents have to deal with a lot but one thing they might not think about is all of the "stuff" that comes with kids.
Toys, diapers, bottles--remembering what to bring and carrying it all can be more than a headache.
11 News Reporter Jessica Zartler is live in the studio with more on what this can do to your body and how to cut down on all that clutter.
Even if you don't have kids and you're a woman like me chances are this is what your carrying when you go out the door--a purse, makeup, gym bag and a lunch bag.
Add a baby and a diaper bag and doctors say it can really take a toll on your body.
Jessica Downing–Ford is a single mom fighting a daily battle against clutter.
"Suddenly you have to leave the house with an entire list of things..clothes, spit-up rags, food and carseats," she told 11 News on Wednesday.
Downing-Ford says when your carrying bulky bags it really packs on the pounds.
"I thought it would be funny to step on the scale one day at the supermarket with all my bags and it was 17 lbs extra!"
She says she's even thrown her back out.
"I see my chiropractor weekly," said Downing-Ford.
Dr. John Quackenbush says it doesn't take much to do damage.
"It only takes the weight of a dime to cause nerve interference," the chiropractor told 11 News on Wednesday.
He says over time, carrying bags and babies can cause pinched nerves and back pain.
"A lot of times you have baby on one side and two or three bags on the other. You really need to be conscious of how you're bending. The thing here is you really have to balance your body equally," said Quackenbush.
There are ways to cut the weight and the clutter you carry everyday.
Downing–Ford says she's winning the battle. Now as a professional organizer she's helping other moms do the same and she's found ways to take a load off.
Atleast until her kids get older.
"I'm training them to carry stuff. I figure I've carried their stuff long enough.. them and their stuff. Their time's coming," said Downing-Ford.
Downing–Ford says taking a few minutes to pack and re–pack can save alot of headaches and back aches.
And to lighten up the diaper bag and purse, she recommends getting a kit with diapers, coloring books and non–perishable snacks in the car.
To lighten your purse, leave a make–up bag at work. Downing-Ford says she never carries more than lip gloss and powder.
And of course, take only what you absolutely need.
