Law Enforcement Agencies Warn of Check Cashing Scam

Local law enforcement agencies are warning consumers about a possible new scam in the area.

Jana Burritt says she checked her mail and got a letter from a company called Shoppers Research Incorporated. It was addressed to her and claimed she was part of a pre-selected group of mystery shoppers.

The letter came with a check for nearly $5,000 and asked her to spend it at a variety of stores, then wire back more than $2,800. Burritt reported it to deputies and then called 11 news to warn others.

Mesa County Deputies say anytime you get a weird check and someone asks you to send money back it's probably a scam. Anytime you’re suspicious, call the sheriff's office to report it.
