A local women's group is asking Mesa County women to stop watching the Oprah Winfrey show and to cancel subscriptions to her magazine.

The Mesa County Republican women announced Tuesday they are joining with the Florida Federation of Republican Women in boycotting Oprah, after the talk show host said she would not interview Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sara Palin until after the election.

Oprah said although she endorses and has made public appearances with Barack Obama, she does not want to use her show as a platform for any candidates.

The Mesa County Republican Women say they're disappointed, not because of Oprah's political views, but because they feel she is usually a champion of women's issues, and an interview with Governor Palin would be beneficial to people of all political affiliations.

"She should reconsider this decision, we think, and have Governor Palin on her show and interview her about women's issues that are important to women," said Janet Blackman, president of Mesa County Republican Women. "It's a woman thing."

The Mesa County Republican Women say they will bring up the boycott during a Colorado Federation of Republican Women meeting this weekend in Montrose. They hope their efforts will inspire other women's groups in other states to jump on board.
