It all started at 9:44 Monday morning as fall officially rolled into the Western Slope.

Thousand will soon be making the trek to the top of the Mesa for all the changing colors. But some trees have yet to make the transition from the dog days of summer to the colorful fall conditions.

Steve Bailey, co-owner of Powderhorn Resort, says the lack of color at the resort is only temporary. Bailey says, "Everything in Western Colorado seems to have gotten somewhat of a late start and it's just floating along just about two weeks delayed. I think probably we are on the leading edge of what may be the most beautiful color season that we've had in years around here."

Susan Rose a horticulturalist with the CSU Extension here in Mesa County says depending on the climate sometimes there can be a delay. Rose says, "We had a cold lingering spring this year and so that has kind of put everything behind. Hopefully they will color in time for Color Sunday next weekend."

Rose says even with the long cold spring the Mesa can still have a great color season. Rose says, "When we have a lingering late summer and early fall with warm days and cool nights but not freezing temperatures yet, that really contributes to an excellent fall color season." Rose says that freezing conditions can actually hurt color transformation.

Regardless Bailey says Color Sunday this Sunday will go on as scheduled. Bailey says, "This little pocket that Powderhorn Resort is in is just starting its change and by next Sunday it should be spectacular."
