Fruita Teen Arrested in Desert Stabbing Case

A Fruita teen is behind bars, accused of stabbing another teen in the face with a metal pole during a party in the desert last week.

The Mesa County Sheriff's Office arrested 18-year-old John Stene Monday evening on charges of first degree assault.

On September 21, Stene and another teen, 18-year-old Travis Stout, were in the desert with a large group, having a party in honor of a friend who had recently been killed in a motorcycle accident.

Stout's family says during the party, the two got into an argument. They say Stene then picked up a metal pole he found on the ground and jammed it into Travis' face.

The blow broke Travis' jaw in three places and left a six inch hole near his chin.

"We're quite pleased to hear they finally arrested this guy," said Wayne Stout, Travis's father.

"I'm glad and I'll be able to sleep better knowing that he's not on the streets," said Travis Stout.

The Stouts say Travis continues to do well and his jaw will likely continue to be wired shut for the next two weeks.
