I-70 Now Back Open Following 3 Car Crash

Both lanes of westbound Interstate 70 are back open this morning after one lane was closed for more than 7 hours following an accident.

A King Soopers grocery store semi truck caused a three car accident and dumped food all over the lanes around 11:00 p.m. Tuesday night. While crews cleaned up the mess both lanes of I-70 were closed for around an hour, by midnight the left lane re-opened, but the right lane stayed close for more than 7 hours.

The accident happened in the westbound lanes of I-70 just outside of De Beque. The driver of the semi truck told state troopers that he was changing a CD, when his rig ran off the road taking out around 100 feet of guard rail. The driver then lost control and ran his truck into an overpass bridge. The crash split his trailer in two and spilled groceries all over the road.

The semis rear axle, along with the tires, rolled down the highway where a car and then a pick up truck both hit it. The person in the car was taken to the hospital; the driver of the semi and the driver of the pick up truck were not injured. The semi driver was cited for careless driving.
