When you think of elementary school hot lunch, it's typical to picture tater tots and dinosaur–shaped chicken nuggets, but a new program sponsored by the Children's Health Foundation is looking to change that.
In honor of National School Lunch Week, 11 News is highlighting a special program, currently being tested out in select districts, including the RE-2 School District in Rifle.
Program officials say it works by completely re–vamping school lunch menus to include more fruits and vegetables, and cutting out sugar, processed foods, and caffeine.
Students still go through the hot lunch line, but it's now made up of homemade meals, instead of processed items, and includes a new kid-sized salad bar.
RE-2 School District Nutrition Director Susan Beecraft says implementing the new "Lunch For Life" pilot program is a core part of the childrens’ education.
The program is thanks in part to a grant from the Children's Health Foundation.
Wamsley Elementary School officials say the program is worth it and hope to see it move on to schools, nationwide.
