Firefighters Worry Economic Woes May Lead to More House Fires

Home heating devices are the second leading cause of house fires
and firefighters warn trying to cut costs on maintenance could back fire.

In Grand Junction, an average of five fires a year start in a chimney flue or heating system. Mike Page with the Grand Junction Fire Department worries that number may jump.

With the economy putting a pinch on family finances, Page says some people may try to save a few bucks by skimping on maintenance and that's a very bad idea.

"Whatever kind of furnace or wood burning stove, you should have it well maintained before you start it up this winter."

He says not only does cleaning out the gunk in your fireplace clear a fire hazard, it can actually save you money in the long run.

"It's a great way to cut down on energy costs and that may make a big difference to folks this year."

More than money, Page says it can save your life, and you can't put a price on that.
