The National Retail Federation estimates that consumers will spend nearly five billion dollars on Halloween this year, and despite economic woes that number is up more than a billion dollars from 2007.
Surveys show that Halloween is the sixth biggest spending holiday, and still gaining ground. A National Retail Federation survey shows us that consumers are spending almost ten dollars more per person than last year.
Ken Dixon, co–owner of Mad Margaret’s says that this Halloween season has been bumpy; sales were down, then up, then down again but seem to be catching up as the holiday creeps closer. Dixon says right now his sales are about five-percent behind last year’s.
He says friends of his who own a similar store in Phoenix haven't been so fortunate, they've decided to skip Halloween and Thanksgiving and go straight to Christmas. Dixon points out, "everything we sell, people don't need and that's the honest reality of it, it's not like food or clothing.”
People 11-News spoke with say that’s a scary thought in itself, adding that many spend well over $200 on Halloween.
