Victim Identified in Fatal Hit and Run Crash

The Mesa County Coroner's Office says 28-year-old Ashley Chapman of Grand Junction died in a crash that happened at D ½ and 30 Rd. around 6:00 p.m. Sunday.

Grand Junction police were called to the intersection on report of a hit and run. Police say Chapman made a left turn and was struck by a Ford F-150 truck. The driver of the truck fled the scene but was later found by police.

Chapman was taken to St. Mary's Hospital, and later pronounced dead. Three other juveniles with serious injuries were also transported to St. Mary's.

The driver of the truck, 25 year old Brandon Walton was arrested for suspicion of vehicular homicide, vehicular assault, DUI and hit and run.

    I WAS A FIRE FIGHTER IN TEXAS SHORTLY BEFORE MOVING UP HERE IN GRANDJUNCTION, I WAS ONE OF THE FIRST TO ARRIVE AT THE SEEN AND WENT STRAIT TO THE LADY. SHE HAD A PAULSE OF 80. I AM VERY DISPLEASED WITH THE ACTIONS OF THE FIRE DEPT AND EMS. AND THE FIRE FIGHTER WHO HAD SUPERMAN VISION WHO PICKED UP THE YOUNG BOY LIKE A SACK OF POTATOES, SAYING HE'S ALRIGHT, I KNOW YOU SHOULD NEVER REMOVE A PERSON WITHOUT SECURING HIM FIRST. YOU COULD EAISLY ENDANGER HIS LIFE MORE! I STEADLY TOLD A EMS GUY SHE WAS CRASHING AND HE REPEADLY SAID SHE WAS OK. BAD DECISION! SHE MIGHT OF PAST ON BUT I BELIVE IF TOOK CARE OF IN THE PROPER MANNER SHE'D OF HAD A FIGHTING CHANCE. HER FACE WILL FOREVER HAUNT MY MIND. MY REGRETS AND PRAYERS GO OUT TO THE GRIEVING FAMILY

    Another senseless death that has ripped apart a young, happy family. I drive trough that intersection 3 or 4 times a day as does my wife, and we have 2 young children, it could have been us or anyone else. The driver had better hope that he gets to spend the rest of his life in prison, because he would never make it to trial if I could get my hands on him! RIP Ashley and our deepest condolences to Joe and the rest of their family, our prayers are with you and the kids for a speedy recovery. The Mapes Family
