They were not first in line, but three Colorado women waited all day to get into Suplizio Field to see Sarah Palin speak. And whatever happens in the election, they were excited to see history in the making.

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is the first ever female vice presidential candidate nominated for the republican party.

The last woman nominated to the VP spot on a major party ticket was Geraldine Ferraro in 1984 for the democratic party.

And for one family Palin's visit is hope for the future of women in politics.

Sherrie Knez, Malissa Squires and six-year-old Ashlynn Squires huddled together under an umbrella on Monday with thousands of others waiting to see Sarah Palin.

"I'm so excited I can hardly stand it," Sherrie Knez told 11 News.

Standing side by side with her daughter and granddaughter, Sherrie says getting a woman onto the Republican Party ticket is long overdue.

"I think it means a lot for women. We've come such a long, long way," said Knez.

She raised her daughter Malissa to pay attention to politics and use her right to vote and now as a mother, Malissa feels a connection to Palin.

"She's a mom, she likes the outdoors, she's has a career, she's a business woman. She's everything an American woman should be these days," Malissa Squires told 11 News on Monday.

She hopes her daughter Ashlynn will see Palin as a role model.

Ashlynn wasn't up for public speaking as she clung to her sandwich in the cold, but her grandma says the-six year-old is already developing an interest in politics.

"She just keeps saying that she wants to see Sarah Palin," said Knez.

Regardless of who wins the election, these women say the run is just as important.

And Sherrie Knez is just glad she can be there with the special women in her life.

"It's a chance in a lifetime. I'm so happy that we are here at this time in our lives and we get to share that with each other."
