A Grand Junction woman is back behind bars after police say she burglarized a house and attacked officers -- all while out on bond for another crime.

The Grand Junction Police Department says just after 2:00 Saturday morning, it received reports of a burglary in progress near 12th Street and Texas Avenue.

When officers arrived on scene, they found 19-year-old Ashleigh Mayes hiding in a pickup truck she had broken into. When they tried to arrest her, they say she fought back, swinging at officers.

Officials say officers were able to handcuff her and get her into the back of the police car -- but on the way to the Mesa County Jail she was able to slip off one of her handcuffs. When officers pulled over to put it back, they say Mayes hit them with the dangling handcuff and tried to escape. Officers eventually got her back in the car and made it to the jail without any more problems. Police say Mayes was highly intoxicated throughout the ordeal.

Mayes now faces multiple felony charges including assaulting an officer, second degree burglary, and escape.

Officials say Mayes had been out on bond for an unrelated aggravated motor vehicle theft, when they arrested her Saturday morning.
