Officials are laying down the law when it comes to businesses that sell alcohol to minors. With the help of ten underage operatives, a multi-agency sting hit 152 businesses across Mesa County over the weekend.
Authorities say during the two day sting, which took place on Friday and Saturday nights, they found 14 businesses -- ranging from liquor stores and convenience stores, to bars and restaurants -- that sold alcohol to their underage operatives.
Officials say the operatives would walk into the businesses without any type of ID and would have to tell cashiers the truth about their age if asked.
When it came to the businesses that failed, they say most store clerks did not card the operatives or ask them for their birthdays.
Officials say the sting operation was made possible through a $45,000 grant the Grand Junction Police Department and the Mesa County Sheriff's Office received. They say this was just the first of many liquor stings they plan to do.
"This isn't over yet," said Grand Junction Police spokesperson Kate Porras. "We really want to get the message out that people need to obey the law. They not only need to card people that come into their establishments but go a step further and ask for their birthday or get other information as well."
Officials say the first time offenders will most likely have to pay a fine ranging from $500 - $5,000. They say a business that has two or more citations within a year will have to appear before a liquor board and may have their lisence revoked.
