Theater Closed, Customers Take Memories as Token

Thursday night marks the fifth anniversary of the Cinema at the Avalon and ironically the theater's last night in operation.

As Brian Wade, the manager at Cinema at the Avalon and his son Tycho roll the projector one last time, Tycho says "the first time I heard about it I started to cry I had a lot of good times here." You can bet that Tycho isn't the only one that is sad to see the cinema close and not just on a personal level, but for the entire community.

Diana Woods Eisner, former Executive Director of Cinema at the Avalon, she says, "it's going to be a big empty void in this town with out the Avalon being open." After five years in operation the cinema couldn't strike a deal with the City of Grand Junction, so it's projectors are shutting down and the doors are closing.

Though the Avalon only ran for five years not only is the building historic, but it’s a part of many people’s history as well; take Andy Jones for example, "being some old timers we enjoy this old theater, we came here in our twenties." Married for 43 years, Jones and her husband used to come on dates at the theater in the Avalon, and it seems to be popular among many, including eight-year-old Tycho. He says on his first date, he took Aubrey Hunt to see “Shadow of the Moon” at the Avalon, and who knows maybe the Avalon has cast its spell, I guess we'll find out in another 43 years.
