A Fruita Monument High School student knew she had to do something when she heard the story of a local family. So, she's inviting the community to dinner as a way to raise money.

Eight years ago McKenzie White was running around with her Appleton elementary PE class when she went into cardiac arrest. Her mother, Mary White says, "so she went from being a typical 6 year old to being a child who couldn't walk or talk." Suddenly everything in McKenzie and her family's life was different; except their house, that stayed the same. White says it just wasn’t working with the wheelchair “the bathroom was inaccessible and the hallways were tight.”

Then about a year ago the family submitted a video to Extreme Makeover Home Edition, but they got no response until a senior at Fruita Monument High School, Ellen Gaglione was shown the video in one of her classes. She says, "someones gotta help them! How can we just be letting this happen as a community, I felt compelled to do something."
Ellen planned a fundraiser for the family, to help build them a new handicap accessible home. Mary White says when she heard the news, she was shocked "I cried, I do a lot of that and they're tears of joy most of the time, but I was very overwhelmed that a high school student would do this."

The fundraiser is Thursday night in the cafeteria of Fruita Monument High School from five to seven o'clock; the cost per person is seven dollars. Other donations can be sent to Altrusa International of Grand Junction CO Foundation; PO Box 904 Grand Junction, CO 81502
