Stabbing Suspect: "Voices Within My Head" Told Me To Hurt Someone
The 14 year old accused of slashing a Montrose High School student's throat appeared in front of a judge this afternoon. Michael Yates was advised of the charges against him and told he could spend nearly 25 years behind bars.
According to an arrest affidavit, the teen told detectives that "voices from within his head" told him to hurt someone.
Yates was advised of the charges against him, he faces first-degree attempted murder, and conspiracy to commit first-degree assault. If Yates is convicted, he could spend anywhere from 8 to 24 years in prison for the first charge and additional time for the additional charges.
Because of his age, he could be sentenced to the Youthful Offender Services, with a suspended prison sentence. If he goes to YOS, he could be there between 6 and 7 years.
Yates will be back in court in early December. At that time, his attorney will advise the court whether they want to have a preliminary hearing.
According to the arrest affidavit, obtained by our friends at the Montrose Daily Press, a police detective says Yates told him "voices from within his head" told him to hurt someone, and then said "her" when he saw Mallory Haulman that day. The affidavit also described how Yates cut 17 year old Haulman, and states that he followed her from the parking lot.
