Alan Helmick wasn’t Miriam Helmick's first husband that has died from a gun shot wound to the head.
According to a report from Jacksonville police, her first husband Jack Calloway Giles shot himself in the head while Miriam laid next to him in bed. The death was ruled a suicide.
A call to the Jacksonville sheriff's office was made earlier to see if Monday’s arrest might cause them to look back into the shooting.
"To officially reopen the case, a request would have to be made by a family member or if some information about the Jacksonville incident was revealed during the Colorado investigation, then we would certainly take a look at it,” said Detective Gary Stucki with the Jacksonville Police Cold Case Team.
Miriam told police back in 2002 that her husband was depressed and shot himself because their daughter died a year prior from a drug overdose.
