More than 44 percent of Colorado schools rated high or excellent in the most recent school accountability reports, released Tuesday by the Colorado Department of Education.

The reports give schools a grade on their overall performance on state assessments, as well as the progress schools are making to meet those standards. They measure that data from the 2007 - 2008 school year.

School District 51 officials say the reports are mostly based on CSAP scores and data they already received back in July. They say the school district is in the process of adding many new programs and resources that the school board budgeted $900,000 for to respond to those sub-par numbers.

"We are building systems to allow teachers to look at student data every single day, to be able to monitor student performance that way," said School District 51 spokesman Jeff Kirtland. "That's where our interest is."

Of the area high schools, Fruita-Monument received the best score on overall school performance with a grade of High. Palisade was the top performer when it came to academic growth, with a score of high.
