Growing Grand Junction: Sheriff's Office to Start Traffic Unit

"There is not a day that goes by or a week that goes by that we don't get a request for increased traffic enforcement," says Mesa County Sheriff Stan Hilkey.

Now those people are getting there wish. The Mesa County Sheriff's Office is preparing to hire two new officers to head up a new traffic enforcement unit. Previously the Sheriff's Office was the only law enforcement agency in the valley that hadn't adopted the model traffic code.

Hilkey says, "We believe that if we adopt the model traffic code this can be a revenue neutral program so that it doesn't cost the tax payers any additional money."

The Sheriff's office will not be investigating any accidents, but they will focus their efforts on areas with a high number of accidents and speeders.

Hilkey says if the unit is successful they will continue to expand to a max of about six officers.
