After voters nixed a $185 million school bond that would have created several new schools in Mesa County, School District 51 officials say they're left figuring out what to do about their overcrowded schools. Now, a new committee is trying to tackle that problem.
During Tuesday night's school board meeting, officials gave an update on the group's early progress.
The committee, which is made up of teachers, school administrators, and community members will spend the next several months looking at three key factors -- examining what can be done to existing schools, such as adding modular classrooms, looking at existing buildings that could potentially be used by the school district, and figuring out how they could change the times and ways the schools are used, like switching to year round school.
The committee has already met three times, and school officials say they're already very encouraged by the energy and creativity they've seen.
The group is expected to make its final report and recommendations to the school board on February 10, 2009.
According to figures from School District 51, enrollment is expected to increase by 2,000 students over the next five years. They say that number will shoot up to 5,000 by 2017.
