Health officials say homes in Montrose County have one of the highest probabilities for elevated radon levels in the entire country. To make sure you stay safe, the Health Department is holding a series of meetings about radon testing.

Officials say the purpose of the meetings is to let residents know about the dangers of too much radon and to show them how they can test for it.

Officials say radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer behind smoking. According to the EPA, radon kills more Americans each year than drunk drivers do.

Officials say fortunately there is a simple solution to this serious problem. They say radon detection kits are cheap and if a home has high levels of radon, it can be fixed.

"It makes sense to protect your health and the health of your family by testing," said Richard Thompson, Environmental Health Manager of the Montrose County Health Department.

Public meetings will be held at the times and places listed below. The Montrose County Health Department says it is planning more meetings over the course of the next several months.
