News Release from the Mesa County Sheriff's Office:

JOHNSON CAPTURED IN MEXICO
Jail escapee caught south of the border

Mesa County, Colorado—The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office received information on January 10, 2009, from Mexican authorities in the Baja region that Shane Edward Johnson, 40, was arrested. Based on leads developed during the course of the investigation, Sheriff's investigators have been working with the Colorado Attorney General's Office, U.S. Federal authorities (FBI and US Marshals), California Department of Justice, and Mexican authorities to locate Johnson in the area he was captured.

Also arrested was Johnson’s wife, Marilynne Ann (Beaman) Johnson, 46, of Colorado Springs. She is in custody in Mexico for her suspected association in Johnson’s September escape.
Sheriff's investigators continue to work with Mexican authorities in their deportation/removal process to extradite Johnson and his wife back to the United States, and subsequently back to Mesa County. The best estimated time frame for the extradition process is within the next 30 days.

**This is an update on the escape of Shane Johnson from the Mesa County Detention Facility. See below for previously released information**

PREVIOUSLY RELEASED ON SEPT 9, 2008— It is now believed Johnson escaped from the Mesa County Detention Facility through the covered exercise yard of the housing area he occupied. Investigators know a group of inmates were in the exercise yard until the evening lock down at approximately 10:30 p.m., and when the group left the exercise yard for their cells it is believed Johnson remained behind and concealed himself within the yard.

Investigators also know that he used deception in his cell to give the appearance of a sleeping individual in the bunk to deceive the on-duty deputy. It was approximately 3:00 a.m. when deputies discovered the ruse and immediately initiated emergency protocols to account for all inmates and to confirm the identity of the missing inmate.

A subsequent review of security video surveillance leads investigators to believe the actual time of escape was just after midnight.
Investigators will continue with their efforts at determining the whereabouts of Johnson, the methods used to defeat the facility construction, if Johnson was assisted by other inmates and/or persons on the outside of the facility, and the procedures and actions of staff on duty during the event.

Due to the on-going nature of this active investigation with a focus on recovery of Johnson, further details will not be released at this time.

PREVIOUSLY RELEASED ON SEPT 9, 2008—Johnson has associates in Southern California, Nevada, Utah and Colorado Springs, and investigators believe it is likely he may travel to any of those locations. Investigators want to caution the public in all locations that Johnson has a history of burglarizing homes and auto thefts, generally in the daytime hours. Any suspicious activity, by anyone in the above states and areas, should be reported to law enforcement immediately.

Johnson’s wife, Marilynne Ann (Beaman) Johnson, 46, of Colorado Springs, is wanted for questioning by investigators in the escape of her husband as investigators have not been able to contact or locate her today. Her photo is attached and she is described as a white female, 5’03” tall weighting about 230 pounds with blue eyes and brown hair. Marilynne’s vehicle is described as a 1999 gold Toyota sedan, with Colorado plates 945-RKT. It is possible that Johnson is with his wife and that they are traveling in the Toyota.

He has been convicted, as recently as May 2008, on multiple felony charges and is currently awaiting sentencing on what is believed to be nearly 150 years in prison for his extensive convictions of burglary and auto theft.

An updated description on Johnson includes a shaved head and weighing closer to 180 pounds, not 210 pounds as previously released.

PREVIOUSLY RELEASED ON SEPT 9, 2008—Shane Edward Johnson, 40, of Clifton is a wanted man this morning. Johnson escaped from the Detention Facility early this morning and details of his escape are being investigated at this time.

Johnson is described as a white male, 6’03” tall, weighing about 210 pounds. He has blue eyes, short brown hair and a stocky build. See attached photos. He is considered dangerous and anyone with information about him or anyone who sees him should contact 911 immediately.

Johnson was in jail on multiple burglary and auto theft charges (more than two dozen cases), since August 2006. And currently has a warrant out of Nevada. He is possibly traveling in a late model gold or silver Toyota sedan.
