The number of kids in home school has jumped 74 percent across the country in just eight years, according to new numbers from the Department of Education.
In Mesa County, more kids are leaving District 51 for homeschool. 219 kids were homeschooled this year, up from 197 kids in the 2005-2006 school year.
School officials support the choice and want what's best for the kids, but if the number of kids leaving outweighs the number coming in, it could be bad for the budget.
“If we lost thousands of kids, we would lose funding,” says Christy McGee of School District 51.
The district says that hasn't happened yet and says some kids who leave for home schooling usually come back or enroll part-time.
