A multi-vehicle accident on Tuesday night has left one person dead and two in the hospital.

According to Colorado State Patrol, the accident began as a single-vehicle crash just before 7:00 p.m. when the driver of a Dodge Ram lost control of his car and, while rotating, traversed both lanes of westbound Interstate 70, colliding into both of the road’s barriers.

State Patrol says that accident turned deadly when the passenger of the Dodge got out of the vehicle. At that time, according to State Patrol, a Kia sedan, also traveling westbound, collided with both the Dodge Ram and the passenger who was outside of the Dodge. The passenger was pronounced dead on the scene.

There were then three subsequent crashes, which State Patrol says were a result of the original two collisions.

Seven vehicles were ultimately involved in the accident.

Both westbound lanes of Interstate 70 were shut down until 11:30 Tuesday night following the collision near mile marker 44. Some westbound drivers sat in traffic for hours while officers cleaned up the scene.

The driver of the Dodge Ram, who State Patrol has identified as Enrique Simental of Espanola, N.M., was issued a summons for careless driving causing bodily injury and for failing to provide proof of insurance.

The status of the two injured people who were taken to the hospital is not known. Neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected as contributing factors in the crash.
