Mesa County just got a new tool in the fight against cancer. Doctors say new high definition scopes will help them to find abnormal growths faster and more effectively.

Kay Hicks, R/N and Director of the Procedures Center at Community Hospital says about the scopes, "We've been waiting for this for a long time. Save lives basically."

Endocrinologist Dr. Masi Khaja agrees. "Yah, I'm really excited this is one of the great new technologies that is out in the endoscopy world," says Khaja. Community Hospital recently bought six high definition endoscopes. Scopes Dr. Masi Khaja uses to detect Colon Cancer. "Colon Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in America," says Dr. Khaja. Dr. Khaja says the new scopes are the first to be used on the Western Slope. "It is a cutting edge technology."

The scopes use color, produce a better picture and have 170 degrees of vision. "Older scopes have the angle about 130," says Dr. Khaja. He adds, "This leads to better polyp grade detection that's the whole point of this examination, to look for polyps."

The new scopes also cut about 10 minutes off the exam time. Dr. Khaja says it makes his job simpler as well. "You get a better view of the entire colon, except you don't have to twist left and right, its less torque its easier on me also doing the examination."

Hicks says the new scopes are an important investment for the hospital. "We feel that we need to do this for our patients, for the community," says, Hicks. Because early detection is the best defense against cancer.
