A van that was driven off a cliff on the National Monument in an apparent suicide attempt was recovered Thursday.

The Eastern entrance to the Colorado National Monument was shut down at 6am to allow a 260 ton crane to recover the van.

The man who drove the van was arrested for molesting a young girl. Officials say 34-year-old Daniel Lyons was arrested on a warrant issued for sexual assault on a child.

The young victim's mother tells 11 News that Lyons was trying to commit suicide when his van plunged off the monument. She says the monument incident happened just hours after he was interviewed by deputies about the case.

According to an arrest affidavit, Lyons admitted to performing sexual acts on the young victim.
