A newly released arrest affidavit is giving us more insight into how an inmate was able to escape from the Mesa County Jail back in September.
According to the arrest affidavit of Marilynne Johnson, the wife of escapee Shane Johnson, he was able to cut through a steel mesh yard area cover and shimmy down the walls of the jail using bed sheets.
The inmate was able to get the hacksaw blades into the jail through the mail. Heather Benjamin says those blades came in "legal mail” which the jail treats differently from regular mail. Benjamin says that the jail is looking into getting a metal detector to scan inmate mail, right now if a jail employee deems a piece of mail “suspicious” it will be taken over to the court house to be scanned through its metal detector.
Benjamin says the jail has made internal changes as far as staffing is concerned on the inside of the jail. Changes to the outside of the facility include razor wire put on top of the fence and some on the roof of the jail.
Marilynne Johnson is currently being held in the Mesa County Jail and Shane Johnson is still in a Mexican prison facing burglary charges there.
