The Colorado State Patrol has identified the young woman killed in a crash early Sunday morning as 18 year-old Samantha Loy. CSP has not determined the exact cause of the crash but they're looking at several factors including alcohol and text messaging.
11 News has also learned from the Fruita Police Department that the young woman was pulled over a short time before the accident in Fruita. Police say when was pulled over for not using her blinker and speeding. At the time of the stop, the officer said he did not observe any indicators of alcohol or drug impairment.
One woman is dead after rolling her car on Interstate 70 near mile marker 23 early Sunday morning.
Colorado State Patrol tells 11 News that preliminary reports indicate alcohol was a factor in the crash. Troopers also say the woman may have been text messaging or using her cell phone before the crash.
The Fruita Police Department has confirmed to 11 News that the woman was pulled over about 30 minutes before the fatal crash but they won't say why.
According to Colorado State Patrol the woman was driving east bound on I–70 when she approached a curve and veered into the median. The car rolled once and stopped in the westbound lane of the interstate. The driver was thrown from the car through the driver side window and pronounced dead on scene, troopers say she was not wearing a seat belt.
The crash remains under investigation. The Mesa County Coroner has not released the woman's identity.
