4 year old in critical condition after possible child abuse

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- A four-year-old boy is fighting for his life in a possible case of severe child abuse.

Sunday night, a child was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital for a broken arm and swollen brain. He is now listed in critical condition.

A family member tells KKCO 11 News his brain was so swollen that doctors had to remove half of his skull, but they told the family there is little chance he will survive.

The boy was in his mother’s custody when he was brought to the hospital, according to the family member.

The Mesa County Sheriff's Office and District Attorney's Office both confirm they are aware and actively involved in a child abuse investigation, but cannot comment further.

The family member says two other children--a six year old and one month old-- were taken from the mother’s house and put into Department of Human Services custody.

KKCO 11 News will continue to update this story as information becomes available.
