Unanswered Unemployment Phone Calls? Help Is On The Way

The Colorado Labor Department is tweaking operations to help process a crush of claims for unemployment insurance.

The Department says more than 6,000 initial claims are being filed per week, up from about 2,900 a year ago, and thousands of workers have been unable to call in to file a claim.

The State Unemployment rate in December was 6.1 percent, the highest rate in five years.

Already, some employees in the unemployment insurance program have been working on Sundays, and the labor department is authorizing overtime and reassigning staff to handle calls. Filers are getting extra time to clarify issues on claims, and in coming weeks, people will be able to handle more functions online instead of having to call a claims agent.
